HOW IT GOT STARTED

History of Barangay Lourmah

In the early 1930s the town of Mahayag was occupied dominantly by Native Subanen and Christian settlers. “Boyed Mahayag” a native subanen term inspired by the mountain ranges and dark forested swampy areas and pristine nature is what this town was called.

Originally Mahayag is under the jurisdiction of the Municipality of Aurora Zamboanga del Sur, and was called “Dao” because of the big and luxuriant growth of Dao trees. Then the Subanen conformed to the proposition that the place be called Mahayag sometime in 1960s, which means Ma = “to be” and Hayag = “bright”.

Initially the barangay was known as “Lower Mahayag”, as a counterpart to “Upper Mahayag” which is currently now the barangay Poblacion. Years went by around 1970s, a certain group of individual in authority, the Alquizars, Valeros and Danghils, came up with a proposition that the barangay be named as “Lourma”. Until later, a certain Atty. Densing suggested the addition of a letter “H” to its name, thus until the present time the barangay is named “Lourmah”.
